Most of the inn’s rooms are built in chumon-zukuri design, a style that was typical for residences of high-ranking samurai. Long wooden corridors connect the rooms. Nearly all of the rooms have garden views of ponds and snowy or verdant mountain peaks. The rooms are simply but distinctly decorated with calligraphy scrolls, intricately carved wood transoms and artfully designed shoji doors. There are rooms for conferences, pottery and painting, a restaurant and pub, and a karaoke house. Meals are usually served in guests’ rooms. The kaiseki parade of intriguing flavors might feature egg cake, salt roasted ayu—the popular freshwater fish—a soothing bowl of miso with vegetables and of course, Koshihikari rice.

Ryugon is less than two hours from Tokyo via Shinkansen and local train, and only a 30-minute drive from skiing. It is a place of refreshing, tingling pure mountain air, thrilling and invigorating vertical trails of snowy white and evergreen, and warm sake, a hot mineral-rich bath, a cozy futon in a space of museum-caliber craft and construction.
